Secure HTTPS hosting
As of today, all sites hosted by Squirrel Solutions under the Squirrel Internet brand will switch to using HTTPS / SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) mode. This is part of a push by both Google and the EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) to move the entire Web to secure hosting.
Previously HTTPS would only have been used for parts of a site where sensitive data is being sent or received, for example online purchases which contained credit card details. Until recently most browsers would not 'cache' any documents or images that had been retrieved via HTTPS, however recent changes in all the major browsers mean that this is no longer the case.
There is no longer any performance 'hit' to a web site by using SSL, and certificates can now be obtained free of charge (previously a certificate had to be purchased from an issuing authority and periodically renewed).
End-users will notice the 'padlock' symbol is now displayed in the browser's address bar next to the web site address.
Squirrel Internet's web servers will automatically take care of the issuing and renewal of any SSL certificates, and there will be no additional hosting charges for moving to SSL.
